Quiz: June 16

Homer has Odysseus wash up among King Alcinous of the Phaeacians, who asks him to tell his story. Odysseus complies, quickly reaching the point of his encounter with Polyphemus and the Cyclopses. The two countries—Phaeacia and the land of the Cyclopses—are both remarkable, and remarkably different, especially when placed side by side like this.

Describe these two lands, their geography and culture, and discuss what they add to the story. What light do the Phaeacians and the Cyclopses cast on Homer's tale? What are they doing here?
